It is a multi-layered memoir, incorporating her father’s war diary and transcriptions from the weeks she spent interviewing him about a war too big for words. He thought pain was a solitary thing, but it wasn’t. His family were all victims of that war and as such, interspersed throughout are her mother’s experiences as a wartime bride and scenes from Linda’s childhood growing up with a loving father who battled PTSD. Most importantly, it is the story of Jesus marching through the jungles with him. Linda’s father survived a bullet to the chest – it left only a bruise – being shot in the back, shrapnel to the groin, and an illness so severe the doctors believed it to be a resurgence of the Black Plague, his miraculous recovery from which would be echoed by Linda’s own medically inexplicable recovery from breast cancer decades later. Larry attributed his great closeness with and understanding of God to his wartime experience; it is Linda’s intention to share the inspirational, miraculous power of Christ through his story, as well as preserve his diary for the significant piece of wartime history it is.
